WHY IS DIVERSITY IMPORTANT OT THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO?

A commitment to diversity is central to the University’s mission of teaching and research. The founders of the University recognized- and we continue to believe-that diversity is essential to open discourse. By confronting ideas and opinions brought forth by people with diverse backgrounds and experiences, we gain a richer intellectual environment and a meaningful understanding of ourselves and our world.

WHAT ARE SOME CURRENT UNIVERSITY EFFORTS TO PROMOTE DIVERSITY?

One example is our practice of need-blind admissions. Every potential student’s application is considered without regard to family financial standing. We seek diverse and talented students; once a student is admitted, the University crafts an affordable financial package for the student and their family. In recent years, we have eliminated the need for loans for students from families with the lowest incomes.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE?

Promoting diversity continues to be a central tenet of the University’s values, one that stimulates our capacity to tackle important problems of our times. Diversity extends to the full scope of our activities as we seek to contribute to our community’s well being through our work in education, crime and violence prevention, community health, and more.It is the University’s obligation to create opportunities for success in all areas, and this open environment makes possible great advances. At the University of Chicago we seek to use our resources and scholarship-and our diversity-to address the greatest challenges facing our society.
